  • The purpose of a Literature Circle is to discuss the text, to help each other better understand the reading, and to ensure no key details were missed when reading.
  • In other words, Literature Circles allow for students to help each other prepare for quizzes, tests, and culminating projects or writing assignments.



Process:

  1. Students will be divided into groups of 5-6 students
  2. Groups will meet on assigned days to share completed Role Sheets and discuss the assigned reading
  3. Groups will be given collaborative assignments to complete in class
  4. Each meeting, groups must pick/assign NEW roles for each student for the following meeting for the new reading assignment



Rules / Warnings:

  • Groups must be discussing the text, the Role Sheets, or the collaborative group assignment
    • Groups considered to be off-task will be separated and required to complete all work individually
  • Individuals must have their Role Sheets completed on the assigned due date in order to participate in the group
  • Students whose names are on the board for nay other reason on the day of the meeting may not participate in the group
    • Students who have not done their homework will be required to complete all work individually
  • Positive / appropriate language must be used within all groups
    • Students referring to others' work negatively will be given a Disciplinary Referral
  • Absent students will still be required to complete any assignments given to the group
  • Any work not completed during the meeting within the allotted time period, must be distributed evenly among the group members and completed for homework




Grading:

  • Students will be given a homework grade (of completion) for their Role Sheets
  • The same grade will be given to all students (present in class that day) for the collaborative group assignment
  • Group discussions / participation will be graded based on responsibilities of role and teacher-observations
